Elementary students often do not have time to write as quickly as the teacher requires. For the sake of speed, handwriting suffers. Simple exercises that can be done in a fun way will improve it. They were shared by neuropsychologist, expert of the City Psychological and Pedagogical Center Maria Kozlova:

Ask your child to draw with both hands at the same time. Drawing methods can be different – from paper and usual felt-tip pens to sand or snow, for example. At first, you can draw with one hand, gradually connecting the second. It is better to start with simple – lines, gradually complicating it – waves, zigzags.

Divide a sheet of paper vertically in half. On both parts of the sheet we draw smiles – first one by one, then simultaneously with both hands. We circle the smile several times in different directions, without removing the pencil from the sheet.

Print out a small fragment of a children’s story or a poem and invite the child to find and cross out all the letters A. Then ask him to also find another letter, for example K. It is recommended to do this speed exercise – first find the letter in 2 minutes, then for a minute, and after – 30 seconds.

Ask the child to draw any letter on your palm or cheek with your finger without naming it (if in the palm of your hand, close your eyes for fair play. Try to guess the written letter. The process of writing with pen on paper “activates” the parts of the brain responsible for memory, attention; Handwritten information is better perceived and remembered – the brain considers it the most important; Writing, like reading, improves analytical and synthesis skills.
