The Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia opened a criminal investigation against Pussy Riot activist Nadezhda Tolokonnikova* under the article on insulting the feelings of believers (part 1 of article 148 of the Criminal Code). About it in my telegram channel writing leader of the human rights group “Agora”** Pavel Chikov.
The reasons for opening the case were “publications on social networks”, notes the lawyer. Chikov does not specify what type of messages he is talking about. As part of the case, several searches were carried out.
From the search warrant issued by Chikov, it appears that the criminal case was opened on July 7, 2022. The resolution itself is dated January 17, 2023. The criminal case is being investigated by the department Meshchansky interdistrict of the Moscow Investigative Committee.
Part 1 Art. 148 of the Criminal Code provides for up to one year in prison.
In February 2022 RBC informed citing sources that the Department of the Meshchansky District Investigative Committee opened an investigation against Tolokonnikova * under the article on insulting the feelings of believers.
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova* is one of the founders of the artistic group Pussy Riot. In 2012, Tolokonnikova*, together with another member of the group, Maria Alyokhina, was sentenced to two years in a penal colony under the article on hooliganism (article 213 of the Criminal Code) for the action “Mother from God, drive Putin away!” in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. In 2013, Tolokonnikova*, together with Alyokhina, was released under an amnesty. Now Tolokonnikova* lives in the United States.
As Chikov notes, it was after the “Pussy Riot affair” that Article 148 of the Criminal Code (violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion) was amended to criminalize insulting the feelings of believers.
In early February, RIA Novosti, citing a source reported that the commission of inquiry has opened an investigation into the dissemination of “fakes” about the Russian army (part 2 of article 207.3 of the criminal code) against Lucy Stein, a member of Pussy Riot. According to the agency’s contact, this is one of s that Stein made on Twitter on March 27, 2022.
