The Volga-Caspian Canal will be deepened in the Astrakhan region by the end of 2023

A headquarters meeting on transport and logistics corridors was held in the region. Governor Igor Babushkin announced that the Volga-Caspian sea channel will be deepened by 2024.

Authorities plan to raise 12 million cubic meters from the bottom of the canal. After that, ships with a draft of 4.5 meters will be able to pass through the channel.

According to the press service of the Astrakhan region administration, such a decision will make it possible to transport modern ships with increased capacity through the terminals of the Astrakhan region. As a result, freight traffic will increase in the North-South transport corridor.

Last year I lifted 5 million cubic meters from the bottom of the Volga-Caspian Canal. This has already increased freight turnover by 14%.
