NYT: Metropolitan Opera to pay Anna Netrebko $200,000 to cancel performances – Reuters

According to her, arbitrator Howard Edelman, who reviewed Netrebko’s claims to the opera, ruled the singer should receive “over $200,000” from theater management for 13 canceled performances last year. This decision is due to a clause in the contract with the theater, which provides for the payment of a royalty to the artist even if the performance is canceled, writes TASS.

The publication notes that Netrebko initially insisted on compensation of $400,000, including for the cancellation of the performances scheduled for 2023. However, the judge did not meet this requirement, arguing his decision by the fact that the agreement on these concerts was not guaranteed by the contract.

At the beginning of March last year, the press service of the Metropolitan Opera announced the cancellation of performances by Anna Netrebko in the context of the situation around Ukraine. Then the theater director said the Russian opera singer refused to “renounce public support” for the Russian president in light of the special military operation to protect Donbass.

Recall that at the beginning of January this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed sanctions on 119 Russian journalists, cultural and artistic personalities. Among them was Anna Netrebko.
