The long-awaited Volkswagen ID.2 has become official

– Published on:

Volkswagen ID.2 has gone official. During the #VWforthepeople event, the German automaker unveiled the concept of a new car that will be added to its 100% electric catalog in the coming years and which is intended to be its main objective to reach a wide audience. . Not only thanks to a new design language, but also thanks to a proposal that promises good autonomy at a competitive price.

The Volkswagen ID.2 is first and foremost an electric car “for everyone” and, on paper at least, it seems to have what it takes to do so. The car will be the first front-wheel-drive vehicle developed on the MEB Entry platform and will be powered by a 166 kW engine, equivalent to 226 horsepower. Thus, it will reach a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds.

Unfortunately, VW didn’t provide too many technical details about the car. Although it was mentioned that it will have a range of up to 450 kilometers on the WLTP cycle.

As for its batteries, it has been confirmed that they will support loads of up to 125 kW instead of 200 kW as previously thought. In any case, it would be more than enough to restore the load at a good speed. According to Volkswagen, the ID.2s will all be able to recharge from 10 to 80% in just 20 minutes.

In terms of design, the Volkswagen ID.2 all is a compact car with a well recognizable aesthetic, but it does not differ too much from what we have seen in other models of the brand. Indeed, at first glance, it looks like a Polo. Not without reason, the automaker itself confirmed ahead of the event that the car will sit between two of the brand’s iconic models: the Polo itself and the Golf.

A wise decision, given that it was originally planned to give it a similar look to the controversial ID.Life concept which went viral in 2021 and drew heavy criticism. As for its external dimensions, the Volkswagen ID.2 will be very close to the Polo, its length barely exceeding 4 meters. But the company assures that its interior space will be more like that of the Golf.

Speaking of the interior, the Volkswagen ID.2 all concept will feature a dual-screen system: one behind the steering wheel and the other on the center console. But it will also have physical controls below it – for the climate control, for example, as well as on the doors and on the steering wheel itself. But during the presentation, special attention was paid to the inclusion of a wheel-shaped team that will be located between the front seats.

It should be noted that during the event held in Hamburg, only the exterior of the car was shown live, with some images of the interior on the screens. We will therefore have to wait a little longer to really take a look at the Volkswagen ID.2 set.

Availability and prices Volkswagen ID.2 all

Volkswagen says the ID.2 will go on sale in Europe in 2025 and will cost less than 25,000 euros. The production version of this concept is part of the strategy of the German car manufacturer to launch 10 new electric models by 2026.

On the other hand, the company assured that, despite the current difficult situation, it is still working on an electric car that it intends to sell for less than 20,000 euros. The latest could be ID.1, which has been rumored for a long time. Also, according to rumors, its price would be 17,000 euros.
