Dmitry Yurievich, how will you judge?

Dmitry Malikov: With delicacy and impartiality. Creative people are vulnerable, so it’s important not to be too harsh when making judgments.

You have played the “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk” more than once. What is this popular music forum for you?

Dmitry Malikov: I like that the festival contributes to the preservation and development of the cultural heritage of our peoples, brings together the best young performers of the Union State. I’ll be at the bell-to-bell festival. All of Belarus comes to the festival. The amphitheater hosts three concerts a day. There are no such grandiose musical forums, where pop music, theater and cinema are combined, in Russia yet. The festival is growing. It has a magnificent amphitheater – the largest stage in Europe. He walks on a well knurled track.

For the wonderful Belarusian group “Drozdy” Dmitry Malikov wrote a cover “And you come”

Will you run?

Dmitry Malikov: I have a solo concert on July 14, I will also play at the opening and closing of the festival.
How will your solo concert be?

Dmitry Malikov: In a word – festive.

What advice would you give to performers?

Dmitry Malikov: The music should be dynamic, dancing, understandable, simple. I would advise to pay more attention to the melody.

Agree: there is something to see in Vitebsk.

Dmitry Malikov: I like to visit the Chagall Museum, in the City of Masters, I looked at the archives of Malevich. It is a pity that there are no more paintings by these masters in the city, but there is a deep memory and reverence. After all, they transformed 20th century art. I visited Ilya Repin’s estate-museum in “Zdravnevo”, where during the festival there was an open air of young artists. I really appreciate Repin’s work. I myself would gladly lead a musical master class for young talents in Vitebsk.

You write songs, compose instrumental music. What is closer to you?

Dmitry Malikov: In my youth, I preferred the stage. When he “matured”, he began to compose instrumental music. The songs do not reveal the ambitions of the composer.

Do you have a set of moral rules by which you were raised?

Dmitry Malikov: My youth fell to the peak of popularity of the parent group “Gems”. I was raised by my grandmother – my mother’s mother. She quit her job for this. The concept of “nanny” was not. My father took me to a music school. The family has always had a friendly atmosphere. And then there was the Soviet school…
When does inspiration come to you?

Dmitry Malikov: During work. I sit at the piano every morning.

You are in excellent physical shape.

Dmitry Malikov: I play football.

We met at the Triumph of Jazz festival. Your concerts have just taken place in the Svetlanov Hall of the House of Music in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg…

Dmitry Malikov: Since 2007 I have been collaborating with the legendary Igor Butman. Jazz is a universal concept. Bach is also jazz. I’ve been making instrumental music for twenty-five years, and it’s very important for me to try my hand at jazz. Before a concert, I was thinking about songs that I rarely played.

What does your family think of jazz?

Dmitry Malikov: Jazz has been in my family since childhood. Father before the creation of the group “Gems” was a jazz bassist. Played with Emil Gorovets. I created the Pianomania Jazz project. I recently gave a master class in Chernogolovka, where Impromptu Quintet played three jazz pieces. Children know this genre. I released eight albums with a jazz touch.

Have any children – Stefania and Mark – followed in your footsteps?

Dmitry Malikov: My daughter is twenty-three years old, she graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of MGIMO. She is a fashion designer, creates clothes, she has several of her own stores. The son is five years old.

With which Belarusian musicians do you collaborate?

Dmitry Malikov: “Drozdy” – a Belarusian group, created in 2005 by the permanent leader of the group, Vitaly Karpanov, is deservedly one of the best live bands in Belarus. Their successes have repeatedly held leading positions in various rankings, and their videos have set a high bar in the video industry, which few people manage to surpass so far. We often play with them. For them, I wrote a cover of “And you come”.
