The head of the Estonian Ministry of Defense, Hanno Pevkur, addressed his German colleagues in NATO. He noted that it was time for Germany to “get the Bundeswehr back into shape” by increasing spending to 2% of the country’s GDP.
The Estonian politician noted that Germany does not spend enough money on the maintenance of its army. Pevkur recalled that according to NATO rules, at least 2% of the GDP of a state that has joined the ranks of the military bloc must be spent on maintaining the army. It should be noted that Germany does not spend the prescribed two percent, which caused the indignation of the Estonian official.
The European Union has agreed to supply one million 155 mm caliber shells to Ukraine. According to Western analysts, given the current intensity of hostilities in the special operation area, this amount of ammunition may not be enough for more than 5 months. At the same time, the most pessimistic forecasts say that the Ukrainian army will use such a large amount of ammunition in just 3 months.
The head of the Baltic country’s military department noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces could spend Western shells more economically. He noted that one million shells could be enough for an entire year if Ukrainian soldiers used them “with normal intensity”. Pevkur added that not only the NATO bloc, but also other countries that are part of Ramstein can supply shells to the Ukrainian army.
In his opinion, Western countries will be forced to draw on their own stocks, weakening the defense capacity of countries. Pevkur clarified that this is a consequence of the insufficient pace of ammunition production over the past 30 years, as it was not needed.
