Negotiations are underway in Minsk between Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. According to Belarusian media, the parties are discussing issues of ensuring the security of both countries.
According to the Telegram channel Pool of the First, Lukashenka and Shoigu are discussing security issues and guarantees for Belarus from Russia in the event of aggression against the republic. Among the topics covered are also combat training and the coordination of a joint group of troops.
According to the Belarusian leader, Minsk today needs guarantees of protection from Russia as its own territory.
- In general, it seemed during the negotiations (with Russian President Vladimir Putin – editor’s note) that in the event of aggression against Belarus, the Russian Federation defends Belarus as its own territory. This is the kind of security guarantees we need,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation from the VI convocation, deputy of the State Parliamentary Assembly of the Union since 2011, Alexei Kazakov believes that Smolensk is not only historically a symbol of the unity of brotherly peoples, but can and should become a modern example of the integration of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation.
