He left the SP in 1999 and joined Sone Lal Patel’s Apna Dal. This was the period when Atiq was being used to make a dent in the minority voters in Purvanchal. Apna Dal gave him ticket from Pratapgarh but he lost the election but to please Atiq, Apna Dal made him the president of UP but in 2002 the party again gave him ticket but this time he won the election. He became MLA for the fifth time by defeating SP candidate Gopaldas Yadav. It is said that Dr. Sonelal had given Atiq a free hand. With time, Atiq’s hold in Purvanchal increased.

After this SP gave ticket to Atiq in 2014 Loksabha election first from Sultanpur seat but later fielded him from Shrawasti but he lost the election. However, in this election he gave a good fight to his rival Peace Party candidate Rizwan Zaheer.
