April 17 in the folk calendar is called Alder Brides. On this day, our ancestors looked at the tree to make a weather forecast for the summer and learn about the future harvest.
In the past, on April 17, special honors were given to the alder, believing that on this day its bark has special healing properties.
Also, our ancestors noticed that if there were a lot of earrings on the tree for Alder brides, then oats would be born well. If there are more cones, then they were waiting for a good barley harvest.
From April 17, they listened to the crickets sing and observed the behavior of the bees to understand when it was possible to expose the hives. It was believed that it was in the Alder Brides that the Crane first gave voice, so this day was also called the Song Singer.
The north wind of April 17 announced prolonged rains and the pink dawn indicated that the weather would soon clear up. If by now the birch had spread its leaves before the alder, then they were preparing for a dry summer.
