More than 186,000 children will go to first grade in Kyrgyzstan in the new school year

All the same rake

Sofya Murzaeva is sending her son Renat to first grade this year. The boy is smart beyond his years. At six years old, he plays chess and even beats his father and older brother from time to time, not to mention the same age. Renat is proud to soon become very big.

  • I will no longer go to kindergarten, where you have to sleep during the day, but to school, – explains the future first-grader. – There are no beds, but there are desks. So I grew up.

“Three years ago we registered our eldest son in school through an electronic system,” Sofya Murzaeva told RG’s correspondent. – Then we encountered difficulties. The server only worked for a few hours, then everything crashed. In the morning, we went to school to register in person, but were refused. I got to the point where I had to go to the prosecutor’s office because they didn’t want to take my child to school in our micro-neighbourhood. It is unthinkable. Frankly, I thought that in three years the system had been debugged, but this year we walked on the same rake. They started recording Renata, and again there were problems. We only succeeded on the fifth or sixth attempt. At 10 a.m., for example, an announcement appeared on the Ministry of Education website stating that the system was down. Then it turned out that our house was not connected with the micro-section of the school where we wanted to send the child. How can this be? After all, we lived in the 12th microdistrict, and we live. And the eldest son goes to the same school. They came to the manager and she said there was nothing she could do.

The situation was resolved after the head of the family informed the hotline of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic about what was happening.
Incidentally, the employees of the department must receive their due. This year they worked faster than before. Nurlan Sharshenbai uulu, head of the digital transformation department of the Ministry of Education of the Kyrgyz Republic, personally talked to angry parents and patiently explained to everyone that the system failure would soon be eliminated and that enrollment of future first-year students would continue. .

  • I understand that parents are frightened by the bitter experience of recent years, when the placement of children in school was associated with difficulties, – explained Nurlan Sharshenbai uulu. – So, as soon as the electronic file was opened, everyone rushed to register. Over 60,000 requests were received per second. The system started to crash. No technique can support such a load. We have advised concerned parents to wait a few minutes and then proceed with registration. On the first day of work, professional developers were on duty to monitor the system. Next year we plan to revise the algorithms, we hope that there will be no such loads and failures.

The ministry did not deny the fact of confusion with micro-sites. It turned out that their borders were indeed changed in some parts of Bishkek. The reason for this is the high workload of schools. True, for some reason they did not tell their parents about it.

how do you study

“In Bishkek, there is indeed a certain imbalance in the load of the schools”, explains the vice-minister of Education and Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic Toktobubu Ashymbaeva. – Some are overcrowded, in others there are enough places, but parents want their children to be placed in more prestigious educational institutions. In addition, many future first-year students do not have a residence permit. This is a serious problem. In addition, adults remember this important moment when they bring documents for registration.

But there is another reason for the bias. Some parents do everything possible to ensure that their beloved child studies in an institution with social status – a gymnasium or a high school.
“Unfortunately, in the 1990s, Kyrgyzstan abandoned the Soviet education system and decided to use the Western model,” Anna Sabko, a doctor of educational sciences, explained to the RG correspondent. “But desire alone is not enough. It should be understood that teachers with approximately the same characteristics work both in “elite” schools and in mainstream schools. This concerns the level of education, professional training, which there is practically no room for improvement, attitudes towards children, the school curriculum, lifestyle and other factors. Separately, I want to dwell on the charge for students. Do they need more? Today, on every street corner, you can see ads about school readiness. Why, if the child just comes to study there? And the child will not be enrolled in the first class of the so-called “elite” if he does not pass the exam. The kid is six years old, his brain is forming and he is already very stressed. Mom and dad are itching day and night: get ready for the exam. As a result, he hates school, not yet in first grade. In the meantime, any psychologist will say that success in studies will only come when she is happy.

According to child psychologist Ainagul Sharsheeva, there are many cases in her medical practice where the status of an educational institution has contributed to the social stratification of children. Those who attended a gymnasium or a high school looked down on their peers who studied in a regular school.

  • That is, the concept of social inequality is instilled in a child from childhood, – emphasizes Ainagul Sharsheeva. “Once a woman brought her niece to me. The girl was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I then wondered why her mother had not brought her. But the reason soon became clear. Mom sent the girl to the gym, but she did not follow the program. Teachers advised to transfer the girl to a regular school so that her poor grades did not spoil the class performance. The pride of the mother, who told everyone that her daughter was studying at a prestigious school, was seriously affected. Reproaches rained down on the young girl every day. The mother categorically refused to transfer her daughter, arguing that she had not given money for school needs for so many years.

crown for school

What is a gymnasium and how to become one in Kyrgyzstan? The Department of Education of the city of Bishkek explained that criteria have been developed to give an educational institution a special status. Among them – a qualified teaching staff, the use of the author’s teaching methods, improving the quality of education. Admittedly, officials find it difficult to answer by what parameters the latter is determined.

In the administrations of gymnasium schools, in turn, they talk about the victories of students at the Olympiads, participation in various competitions and festivals and similar events. But mainstream school leaders also like to set similar examples.
– I will not question the assurances of directors of gymnasiums, but let’s turn to the facts, – says Anna Sabko. – The overcrowding of statutory schools is evident. Needless to say how this affects the quality of the lessons. In 45 minutes, the teacher does not have time to check the homework of so many children. And, of course, there is no time to perform performance analysis. Parents often have to turn to guardians.

The most curious thing is that both in ordinary schools and in so-called statutory schools, children learn from the same textbooks. Question: How do they differ from each other in this case? There is no clear answer to this question yet.

Besides

The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) of the Kyrgyz Republic began in 2023 to analyze the content of school textbooks. This procedure will concern textbooks published in the republic in the Kyrgyz, Russian, Uzbek and Tajik languages. According to the head of the book publishing sector of MN KR Samat Toyaliev, a special commission has already been created. Based on the results of its work, it is planned to compile a list of recommended school textbooks for the start of the school year, taking into account the proposals and selection of experienced and competent teachers.
