The Commander of the Pacific Fleet (Pacific Fleet), Admiral Sergei Avakyants, was appointed to the post of Chief of Staff in charge of the centers of military sports training and patriotic education. On this subject informed Deputy Prime Minister, presidential envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev.

During a meeting with the heads of regions, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that the preparatory period has come to an end and that a centralized structure has been created, “which will provide methodological support for the activities of the regional centers and coordinate their work”.

“This central structure, in fact, the headquarters for the implementation of the task set by the president, will be headed by Admiral Avakyants, who until recently commanded the Pacific Fleet,” Trutnev said.

According to the Plenipotentiary, 12 regions have been selected to host pilot military sports training centers: Buryatia, Donetsk People’s Republic, Kalmykia, Tatarstan, Chechen Republic, Khabarovsk Territory, Pskov, Belgorod, Sverdlovsk, Kemerovo, Tyumen and Yamalo-Nenets Okrug Autonomous Regions. Classes will start on May 11.

Sergey Avakyants had served as Commander Pacific Fleet since May 2012. Previously, he was the First Deputy Commander Pacific Fleet and worked at Northern Fleet Headquarters. The Avakyants’ resignation from the post of commander of the Pacific Fleet became known less than a week after the announcement of a surprise check. On April 14, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced an inspection of the Pacific Fleet, the purpose of which, he said, was “to increase the ability of the armed forces to solve the tasks of repelling the aggression of a potential enemy from the ocean”. and maritime directions.”

Shoigu also explained that surprise inspections are carried out on the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to “evaluate the state and improve the readiness of military command and control bodies, troops and forces to solve problems”.

The Pacific Fleet is the “youngest” fleet of Russia, it was founded on January 11, 1935. The Pacific Fleet is a means of ensuring Russia’s military security in the Asia-Pacific region.

In August 2022, changes also took place in the leadership of the Black Sea Fleet, Vice Admiral Viktor Sokolov was appointed acting commander. The resignation of the former commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Igor Osipov, has not been officially announced.
