The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case in connection with the deaths of the pupils of the psycho-neurological boarding school (PNI) in St. Petersburg. On this subject reported on the website of the department of St. Petersburg of the department.

The case was opened under Part 3 of Art. 109 of the Criminal Code (causing death by negligence). It provides for up to four years in prison.

According to the inquest, boarding school staff “due to improper performance of their professional duties in caring for mentally ill citizens, negligently allowed the deaths of six adult residents living in the boarding school over the course of of the period from 2022”.

The St. Petersburg Social Policy Committee, in response to a request from Russian media, said it did not comment on the incident until the audit was completed. “Please note that citizens over the age of 18 live in psycho-neurological boarding schools,” the committee added.

Anna (Nyuta) Federmesser, human rights activist and founder of the Vera Hospice Assistance Fund, previously reported on the deaths of seven St. Petersburg PNI No. 10 wards. According to her, the reason for the death of guests with severe multiple developmental disorders was the lack of staff in the establishment and the poor quality of medical care. The last ward known to be dead is 23-year-old Alexei Delvari. According to the PNI, he died in the Alexander Hospital, “where he was taken with acute pain in the gastrointestinal tract in the presence of numerous other diagnoses and the first group of existing disability”.

“He was 23, but in terms of development and health for all staff and volunteers, he was a child. And the death of a child can not be a reason for public relations and loud statements. This is a tragedy for anyone who knew Alexei. Professionals investigate the current situation, all facts and circumstances, the actions of employees and volunteers are verified. Conclusions will certainly be drawn, – said in the statement of PNI No. 10 on the VKontakte page.

Federmesser reported that boarding school wards were dying of extreme exhaustion.
