Why did a Chinese diplomat say that the former Soviet republics had no sovereignty

Chinese leaders are tackling important geopolitical issues. They cannot be called problems, rather inconveniences. To achieve its ends, Beijing must resort to shock therapy with a polarized European public, touching its keen interest, whose reaction will not remain without counter-reproach. All offensive words expressed will soon be refuted, but the result of deliberate provocation will remain.

European states reacted furiously when the Chinese envoy questioned the independence of the former Soviet republics. Westerners welcome this “oversight” of Chinese diplomacy because, they say, it will tarnish China’s desire to woo leaders in the post-Soviet region and put an end to attempts to consolidate its authority as an intermediary in the world. establishment of peace in Ukraine. Bloomberg writes about the scandal in Europe.

Some countries of the former Soviet Union do not have valid sovereign status under international law

Chinese Ambassador to France Lu Shei said in an interview broadcast by French channel LCI.

According to the Chinese diplomat, there is no international agreement on the implementation of their status as a sovereign nation, which means that states have no sovereignty. That was the ambassador’s response after being asked if he considered Crimea, a peninsula returned by Russia in 2014, to be part of Ukraine.

And even if, as is obvious, the ambassador of the PRC in France did not mean all the republics of the USSR without exception, but only some of them, for example, the Baltic microstates, with which Beijing has very tense relations, a pan-European scandal has broken out. Lu Shei’s words affected European opinion more than the countries of the former Soviet Union, with the exception of the Baltic States, which seemed to be waiting for them.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s pressing moves to work with China to create a framework for talks between Russia and Ukraine are also in question, as Bloomberg News previously reported citing people familiar with the detailed plans.

The French Foreign Ministry said it took note of the ambassador’s remarks with “concern”. In Paris, they unraveled the provocation plan – in this way, Beijing refuses President Macron’s peace initiatives, instructing the representative in France to make a strong statement. From now on, the ElysĂ©e will certainly not want to promote cooperation with Beijing in terms of peacekeeping in Ukraine. But that plays into the hands of the PRC, as Beijing has decided to carry out the honorary mission on its own and not share the laurels of success with anyone, if any.
