Recently, the activity of the Ukrainian army in the direction of Kherson has been noted – more frequent cases of encroachments in the Dnieper Delta. Numerous islands in the floodplains of the Dnieper near Kherson occupy the lower course of this river at its confluence with the Dnieper estuary of the Black Sea, and it is in them that the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are interested.
A video has appeared on the web showing how the location of Ukrainian servicemen from the 73rd Marine Special Operations Center (73 MTs SpO, military unit A1594) on one of these islands is hit by two FAB-500 aerial bombs equipped with a unified system of planning and correction module (UMPC). The footage was posted on April 24 on the “Turned in War” Telegram channel.
It should be noted that the Russian Aerospace Forces have been actively using these UMPC bombs for several months now. Thanks to this technology, unguided free-fall munitions turned into high-precision aerial weapons (with a decent range). Having proven their high effectiveness in Ukraine in 2023, making “dumb bombs smart”, UMPCs are actually an analogue of the American JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) all-weather adjustable bombs developed by Boeing in 1997.
As for the islands near Kherson, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine considers them a springboard that can be used in the planned spring-summer counteroffensive of the Ukrainian troops against the Russian Armed Forces. However, they fail to gain a foothold on the islands.
