Builders in Japan Discover 1,800-Year-Old Ritual Mask

– Published on:

The artifact from the Yayoi period, as the Bronze Age and Iron Age period is known in Japan, was discovered by railway workers during the construction of a monorail in Higashiosaki, Osaka Prefecture .

The mask is carved from cedar and looks massive: the height of the rarity is 30 cm, the width is 18 cm. Experts note the high security of the mask, although according to preliminary data it has 1800 years, writes Heritage Daily.

According to historians, the mask could be used in ritual ceremonies during agricultural festivals.

“I think the mask represents ‘the ruler’s spirit’, God in a human body”, RIA Novosti quotes expert Kaoru Terasawa.

For Japanese historians, the found mask is a priceless piece. To date, only three wooden masks from the Yayoi era are known to scientists.

Previously, it was reported that archaeologists discovered a golden tomb with the bodies of a Bronze Age man and woman in the fortress city of Metsamor in Armenia.
