Sudanese against war.. Do the sounds of peace overshadow the sound of guns?

Calls for an end to the fighting are rising from the drums of war that beat vigorously on the Sudanese scene in the days following the outbreak of military clashes, while positive approval has emerged for the option of negotiation as a means to resolve the crisis.

According to Volker Peretz, head of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, the army and the Rapid Support Forces have agreed to send their representatives to hold talks in the Saudi city of Jeddah or Juba, the capital of South Sudan, in the greatest breakthrough towards the crisis.

A broad front to stop the war

Among the newly formed Sudanese initiatives to stop the conflict is the “Civil Front to Stop the War and Restore Democracy”, which includes resistance committees, civil society organizations, civilian political forces, labor and professional organizations and university professors, including the Unions of Journalists, Doctors and Lawyers, and the Association of Sudanese Professionals. Activists from civil society organizations launched a signature campaign under the name “Sudanese Against War”, joined by thousands of prominent Sudanese and national figures, all of whom sought to end fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces as soon as possible. possible, given the deteriorating humanitarian situation.

Reject violence

Hussam El-Din Haidar, one of the actors in these initiatives, told Sky News Arabia:

Their movement starts from a standpoint of rejecting war, and it is a moral and ethical principle adopted by any sane person who believes that the building of societies and states can only be achieved through stability and peace. civil and societal forces, and this is part of the objectives of the December revolution which reject violence and hate speech. the war that the Sudanese have been suffering for 65 years and has been a real obstacle to the development of the country.

Communities on the Crisis Line

In addition to the internal movement, Sudanese communities in several countries around the world, including France, the Netherlands and Britain, have participated in protest vigils during which they carried banners calling for an end to the war. between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, protecting civilians and opening safe humanitarian corridors to evacuate stranded people and deliver humanitarian aid, as women’s groups in my state have done. The Blue Nile and South Darfur are the same. A community initiative has succeeded in stopping the fighting in Nyala town, the capital of South Darfur state, after violent clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces left dozens dead and injured . The initiators divided the city into two parts, with the army securing the southern part and the Rapid Support Forces on the northern side of the city, and the police deployed in the middle to establish security and stability.

Popular pressure

Professor of political science in Sudanese universities, Professor Salah Al-Douma, described these initiatives as a good movement and he must continue because it is one of the most important means of pressure on the warring parties to stop the fighting. which take place in different parts of the country. Al-Duma said in his interview with Sky News Arabia: “If these popular movements are combined with international efforts, they will lead to good results to stop the war, no matter how intransigent the parties are, and this is proven in sociology. . Popular cohesion and formation of civil fronts that reject the continuation of the armed conflict in the country. On the contrary, military expert Khalil Muhammad Suleiman believes in his interview with “Sky News Arabia” that the situation in Sudan has passed the stage of local initiatives and is on the way to escaping even international efforts which are currently focused on the evacuation of foreign nationals. without taking effective measures to limit this conflict which is growing day by day. Suleiman said, “I don’t expect any tangible results from these grassroots people’s movements, even negotiation itself has become a useless means due to the complexity of the conflict, and any upcoming round of talks will come up against the issue of merger, demobilization and the fate of the current leaders of the belligerent forces, and thus the military decision to achieve a landslide victory has become a preferred option for both sides.

Reduce polarization

Hossam Haidar believes their initiative has so far been successful in defusing polarization, calling for war and militarizing public space, and is making steady progress until it achieves its goals of reaching a ceasefire. – permanent fire in the country, leading to agreements on mergers and demobilization processes under a secure and stable situation. Military clashes that erupted between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15 claimed the lives of 512 civilians, including 169 from the capital, Khartoum, and injured 4,193 others in Khartoum and the states, according to the ministry. of Health. led to the shutdown of 72% of hospitals leading to catastrophic health conditions. About 75,000 people have fled following the conflict in Sudan to neighboring countries Egypt, Ethiopia, Chad and South Sudan, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, while foreign countries organize large-scale evacuations of their nationals from the country.
