London ! Renowned UK-based Indian-origin actress and writer Meera Syal has been awarded the Fellowship of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). It is the highest award given by BAFTA to an individual for an outstanding and extraordinary contribution to film or television in Britain.
Born to Punjabi parents and raised in the West Midlands region of England, Meera Syal (61) was awarded an MBE and then a CBE by the late Queen Elizabeth II for her contribution to the field of drama and literature.
Meera Syal, who shot to fame with television shows like Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42, has carved a niche for herself as an actress, screenwriter and novelist. The fellowship will be presented to him during the BAFTA Television Awards ceremony on May 14 at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
Meera Syal said that she is extremely honored and excited to receive this fellowship. “I look forward to joining many talented artists and continuing to work to make BAFTA a truly representative and celebration venue for all of our creative people,” she added.
