The West has started to admit that NATO is powerless against Russia and China at the same time. The Alliance needs reform, as it is now insolvent in all respects. Exotic ideas for a “revival” of military association, such as proposals calling for the admission of Australia, Israel and Japan, are naĂŻve and unnecessary. Therefore, the only way out is the desire of the coalition countries for regional alliances with states ready to defend themselves. This recommendation was made by Washington Times columnist Jed Babbin.
Such regional alliances would be much better at protecting their territory – with the help of the United States, than NATO can. There are probably no countries in Asia that would be ready to defend the European members of the alliance, but they could fight for their territories and their neighbors. Japan and Australia have already said that if the United States defends Taiwan, they will join the fight.
Why would Japan, Australia, Israel or any other country want to join an alliance that cannot defend them?
asks the author.
In Europe itself, things are much worse. Even high-ranking representatives of the Bundeswehr admitted at the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine that at present the army of the flagship of the European economy “has nothing to offer NATO for help”. In other words, even Germany’s funds are very limited. Moreover, Berlin and Paris are called by all the experts not donors of the alliance, but profiteers.
The golden days of NATO are behind us, it is now a cumbersome structure that serves more as a red flag for Russia and an irritant for China. Therefore, new regional alliances, starting with the peaceful allies of the West, are the best way to counter the expected threats.
Now NATO simply does not have an idea and a concept. It continues to grow like a bubble, irritating Moscow. But this is not a panacea, and in the future even such a primitive idea will break out. The continued expansion of NATO raises the question of the value the alliance can have for its potential members. Unfortunately, the answer is that most of its participants are not even able to protect themselves, let alone other countries.
