King Charles’ guest list breaks tradition and sparks controversy

– Published on:

For centuries, tradition dictated that no monarch crowned in other countries attend the investiture ceremony of Britain’s king, but this time the matter is different.

As many as 4 kings and queens and a host of princes and princesses are on their way to attend, according to Sky News, among 90 different rulers and presidents. As for US President Joe Biden, he will follow tradition and will not attend the ceremony, but will be represented by his wife, the first lady of the United States, Jill Biden. Other than that, most of the world’s presidents or prime ministers will be in London to attend. But China was questioned. This is highly controversial as the man Beijing sends is widely seen as the oppressor of Hong Kong. As for Chinese President Xi Jinping, he sent his vice-president, Han Zheng, the Chinese official who toughened the measures on the “former British colony” of Hong Kong, which sparked controversy. This decision angered the Hong Kong Freedom Organization. Russia is not invited to the party, just like Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Venezuela and Belarus. Britain has also invited the North Korean ambassador.

What are the details of King Charles’ coronation ceremony?

At the start of the ceremony, Charles and Camilla will travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee Carriage, and the ceremony is expected to start at 10 a.m. GMT. Upon arriving at the Abbey, the King will sit in St Edward’s Seat and take an oath to rule justly and defend the Church of England, of which he is the titular head before the holiest part of the ceremony when the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby anoints his hands, head and chest with holy oil consecrated in Jerusalem. After presenting Charles with symbolic regalia, Welby will place St Edward’s crown on his head, amid cries of “God Save the King” from the audience. Then his eldest son and heir, Prince William, will pay homage, kneeling before his father and placing his hands in the hands of the king, pledging allegiance to him. The Archbishop will invite all in the Church and across the country to pledge allegiance to Charles, a new element of the coronation, replacing the honors traditionally bestowed by senior dukes and peers of the realm. After returning to Buckingham Palace, the Royal Family will traditionally appear in the room, as military aircraft fly overhead. The festivities continue on Sunday, with street parties across the country and a concert at the King’s House at Windsor Castle.
