“May God protect the king.” The coronation of Charles carries the scent of history

Charles has taken over the reign of Britain to succeed his mother, Queen Elizabeth, after her death last September, and at the age of seventy-four he will become the oldest British monarch to wear the crown of Saint-Edouard, 360 years old. his head when seated on the throne, which dates back to the 14th century at Westminster Abbey in London.

Under the gaze of a hundred heads of state and dignitaries, including the American first lady Jill Biden, Charles is crowned, like 40 of his predecessors, at Westminster Abbey, which has witnessed all the ceremonies of coronation of the country since William the Conqueror in 1066.

His second wife, Camilla, 75, will be crowned queen consort at the two-hour ceremony.

Although the ceremony is steeped in history, its officials will attempt to portray the image of a monarchy and a forward-looking nation.

The ceremony will be on a smaller scale than that held at the late Queen Elizabeth’s coronation ceremony in 1953, but it will nevertheless aim to be impressive, as it will include a group of historic emblems ranging from balls to gold and jeweled swords with a scepter bearing the largest colorless cut diamond in the world. .

After the ceremony, Charles and Camilla will set off in the golden four-ton royal chariot built for George III, the last king of the American colonies, which were subject to Britain, back to Buckingham Palace in a one-mile procession long of 4,000 soldiers from 39 countries in ceremonial uniforms.

It will be the biggest such parade in Britain since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, and thousands are expected to march through the streets and the event will be watched by millions in homes and around the world on the television.

What are the details of King Charles’ coronation ceremony?

At the start of the ceremony, Charles and Camilla will travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee Carriage, and the ceremony is expected to start at 10 a.m. GMT. Upon arriving at the Abbey, the King will sit in St Edward’s Seat and take an oath to rule justly and defend the Church of England, of which he is the titular head before the holiest part of the ceremony when the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby anoints his hands, head and chest with holy oil consecrated in Jerusalem. After presenting Charles with symbolic regalia, Welby will place St Edward’s crown on his head, amid cries of “God Save the King” from the audience. Then his eldest son and heir, Prince William, will pay homage, kneeling before his father and placing his hands in the hands of the king, pledging allegiance to him. The Archbishop will invite all in the Church and across the country to pledge allegiance to Charles, a new element of the coronation, replacing the honors traditionally bestowed by senior dukes and peers of the realm. After returning to Buckingham Palace, the Royal Family will traditionally appear in the room, as military aircraft fly overhead. The festivities continue on Sunday, with street parties across the country and a concert at the King’s House at Windsor Castle.
