Trump condemns decision to hold him responsible for sexual assaults: a disgraceful court decision

– Published on:

In a comment on his social network, “Truth Social,” Trump reiterated that he does not know writer and former journalist E. Jane Carroll, who accuses him in the rape and defamation case against him, pointing out, “I have absolutely no idea who this woman is.”

Details of the case and the conviction of Trump by the jury

A US jury said on Tuesday that former President Trump assaulted writer E. Jane Carroll was sexually abused in the 1990s and then tarnished her image by calling her a liar. The commission decided to compel Trump to pay her $5 million in restitution. Stephen Cheung, Trump’s spokesman, said the former US president, who resumed campaigning in 2024, will appeal the decision and Trump will not have to pay compensation until the case will be on appeal. Carroll, 79, testified in the civil trial that Trump, 76, raped her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1995 or 1996, then defamed her by accusing her of having lied in a post on his personal platform last October. . Although the commission concluded that its findings were sufficient to prove Trump’s liability for harming her, it did not convict him of raping her. The jury deliberated nearly three hours before rejecting Trump’s denial of assaulting Carroll. Trump did not attend any of the hearings for the trial, which began April 25. Trump will not face any criminal consequences or the threat of imprisonment, as this is a civil matter. Trump’s legal team decided not to file arguments in the hope that Carroll would not present compelling reasons to the jury. Trump said Carroll, a former Elle magazine columnist who belongs to the Democratic Party, made up the allegations in an attempt to boost sales of his memoir in 2019 and hurt him politically.
