US ready to ease sanctions on Russia

The United States could partially lift sanctions against Russia in order to send prisoners Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan home. This was reported by CNN.

“US officials are also interviewing allies who have no Russians in their custody to see what proposals might prompt Moscow to release US citizens held in detention centers. The White House is also considering a limited lifting of sanctions,” writes CNN, citing an unnamed US administration source.

The exchange of prisoners is now impossible, since there are no more Russians in American prisons. However, the United States is looking for them in other countries, such as Germany, Norway and CIS countries.

Earlier it became known that the United States itself did not include Whelan in the prisoner exchange. They chose to bring home the basketball player Brittney Griner, convicted of transporting drugs.
