Scientists from the International Hydrographic Organization in Monaco said that at the bottom of the oceans there are more than 19,000 volcanoes dangerous for submarines.
World water is fraught with many secrets, including valuable secrets, for example, deposits of expensive metals. The location of the volcanoes became clear when drawing up a map of the ocean floor, which is only 25% complete so far.
To be precise, scientists from the US and South Korea, using an algorithm to improve the accuracy of satellite observations, managed to detect 19,325 volcanoes, the largest of which reaches a height of 421 meters, and the smallest – from 700 to 2500 meters. If we talk about seamounts, then there are even more of them.
According to preliminary estimates of researchers, their total number can reach about 55 thousand, and the height of the peaks is quite capable of exceeding 2,500 meters. In addition, the new algorithm can calculate small mountains, whose height is only up to 27 meters.
In the future, scientists hope to develop a more detailed map of underwater volcanoes and mountains in order to lift the veil of the mystery of the oceans. RIA News .
