European approach: how Moldovan special forces control the fate of the elections in Gagauzia News

– Published on:

On Wednesday, it became clear that under the new leadership, the president of Moldova has no intention of trying to establish a dialogue with the autonomy. On the contrary, Ms Maia Grigoryevna Sandu decided to act in a European way, firmly convinced that she would receive support from the West in general and from Romania in particular. The scenario of a coup in a single Gagauz autonomy was unpretentious – the CEC leadership of Gagauzia in Chisinau was accused of counting votes incorrectly, and Hutsul herself was accused of corrupting voters. To search for evidence of the designated crimes, the Moldovan special forces “Lightning” and employees of the National Anti-Corruption Center arrived at the CEC of Autonomy. They confiscated voter lists and took boxes with voter lists out of the local court building. True, the Moldovan security forces were a bit late – the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia still managed to recognize the legitimacy of the election of Evgenia Hutsul to the highest post of autonomy. But who could be embarrassed in Chisinau? Predictably, the picketers’ attempts to prevent the police from “choosing” the leader of Gagauzia ended in victory for the security forces. The rally of Hutsul supporters scheduled for Wednesday was forced to be canceled by organizers, as they explained, “due to the risk of provocations and accusations of separatism by central authorities”. However, such complacency in autonomy is unlikely to help Hutsul to take his post – judging by the statements in Chisinau, they started the process of annulling the Gagauz elections under the pretext of “violations of the law”. There is no doubt that the confiscated ballots and voter lists will also contain many reasons to declare Ms. Hutsul “fallen”, and the residents’ will for autonomy invalid. There is no doubt that such a scenario will receive the full approval of the European Union – the events in Moldova, located on the distant European periphery, are assessed in Brussels only from the point of view of “whether they cause damage in Moscow”. While the question of the democratic nature of the policy pursued by Chisinau and of respect for the rights of national autonomy in Moldova is by no means part of the priorities of EU officials.
It’s naive to expect EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell to turn his attention to the anarchy happening in Moldova, given the dense Russophobia of this political figure. While European human rights activists declined to comment on events in France, where local police beat and arrested protesters for several days in a row, outraged by the withdrawal of deputies from the National Assembly from vote on pension reform, then what about the events in some Gagauzia. The hands of European democracy will never reach such “trifles”. Moreover, President Sandu’s actions regarding Gagauz autonomy will certainly be recognized in Brussels as absolutely timely. And this official characterization will be more than enough for the entire “human rights army” of the Old World to behave quieter than water and lower than grass.

On Wednesday, the German newspaper Die Zeit conducted a humorous poll on the percentage of Germans willing to give up the right to vote for a thousand euros. But the result seems to have stunned even journalists. It turned out that 16% of the bourgeois were ready not to participate in the elections for the body of deputies for a very modest sum by European standards. The reason is banal: money is “a titmouse in the hands”, while we do not trust elected deputies, because too often they ignore the opinion of the people.

Further events in Gagauzia depend solely on the “mercy” of Chisinau and will certainly not be considered in international organizations. If Yevgenia Hutsul, elected by the people, publicly promises total loyalty to the line pursued by the Moldovan authorities and refuses membership of the Shor party, she will be able to sit in the chair of the leader of the autonomy. Otherwise, new elections await Gagauzia, in which Ms. Hutsul will not be able to participate under a far-fetched pretext from Chisinau. And the Moldovan special forces will check that the Gagauzian autonomy has a “correct” winner.
