American singer Tina Turner died on Wednesday at the age of 83 after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. This was announced by his representative.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called his death “an enormous loss for the community that loved him and for the music industry.”

Known as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, Turner began her career in the 1950s and won eight Grammy Awards during her career, including six in the 1980s. She released more than ten Top 40 during this decade, including “Typical Male”, “The Best”, “Private Dancer” and “Better Be Good to Me”.

Turner was born Anna Bullock on November 26, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee, where her father worked on a farm. Her mother left the family when Turner was 11, according to the singer’s 2018 memoir, My Love Story. As a teenager, she moved to Saint-Louis to find her mother.

Ike Turner, whose 1951 song “Rocket 88” is often cited as the first rock ‘n’ roll record, first saw it when, at age 17, she picked up the microphone to sing during her club show in St. Louis in 1957.

Turner then recorded the hit song “A Fool In Love” with her and gave her the stage name Tina Turner, after which they were married in Tijuana, Mexico.

They performed together in the Ike and Tina Turner revue, which they formed together. Their biggest hit was a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary”.

In the 1960s and 1970s, she collaborated with famous rock bands, including The Who and Phil Spector, and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine’s second issue in 1967.

Turner left her husband in 1976 after allegations of assault, and their divorce was formalized in 1978. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum of Fame in 1991 named Ike and Tina Turner “one of the finest live performers Of the history”. Ike Turner died in 2007.

In 1980 she met Roger Davies, an Australian music manager who had worked with her for three decades. With him, she released the solo hit “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, then in 1984 her album “Private Dancer” took her to the top of the charts.

The “Private Dancer” album became Turner’s most successful album with over 200 million copies sold.

In 1985 Turner met German musical director Erwin Bach, who became her partner, and in 1988 she moved to London, beginning to live in Europe. In the 1990s, she released two studio albums which were popular, particularly in Europe, recorded the theme song for the 1995 James Bond film Goldeneye, and had a successful world tour in 2008 and 2009.

After that, she retired from show business, married Bach, renounced her American citizenship and became a Swiss citizen.

She suffered from health issues after her retirement, and in 2018 she suffered a family tragedy when her eldest son, Craig, died by suicide aged 59 in Los Angeles. Her youngest son Ronnie died in December 2022.

She is survived by the two sons of Bach and Hayk, whom she adopted.
