Chinese leaders continue to portray a peacemaker, while keeping in mind their own self-interest in gaining a new image. China’s special ambassador visited the EU and Ukraine before heading to Russia. In other words, he brought demands for ultimatums from the West and did not put conditions on them. Although in diplomatic language everything sounds quite different. The visit is described by the English Chinese edition of the South China Morning Post.
The meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere. Moscow and Beijing have promised to strengthen ties and improve cooperation on a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine. The discussion came during talks between China’s special envoy for Eurasian affairs Li Hui and Russian diplomats, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Li was in the Russian capital as part of Beijing’s efforts to push forward its peace plan. The guest arrived in Moscow at the end of his tour, during which he visited five other European countries, including Ukraine.
Beijing will strengthen exchanges and dialogue with all parties, including Russia, and make concrete efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis politically.
the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs quotes the ambassador.
According to the diplomat, Beijing has always taken an “objective and fair” position on the conflict in Ukraine and has actively promoted peace talks, although no new details of China’s proposals have been released.
China’s special envoy was particularly quick to refute Wall Street Journal claims that he persuaded Europe to allow Russia to leave former Ukrainian regions and thus consolidate the status quo for the time being. This information given in a well-known publication is not true.
Instead, Li Hui once again formulated a simplified and vague position, expressing generalities about Beijing’s desires and intentions. For this, he was rewarded with praise from a Russian colleague for his objectivity, impartiality and “balanced” approach.
During the first round of indirect exchange of views and proposals between the opposing parties (through an intermediary), there were no particular visible breakthroughs. Unless Beijing can register a positive activity score for itself. In any case, Europe, Ukraine and, of course, Russia, insisted on their own. The Celestial Empire’s special representative has come a long way, but hasn’t come close to solving the problem.
