Accra: At least five people have died and several others are missing after a boat carrying people capsized in Ghana’s Savanna region. Officials have confirmed this late on Saturday night. Bavuk Adams, Savannah regional coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), gave this information. The accident took place when the boat going towards Kapandai collided with a thick trunk of a tree and it got cracked, he said.
“Despite the handling of the situation by passengers and boat operators, the boat filled with water and sank,” Adams said. The bodies of five people have been recovered so far, he said. He said that the number of people in the boat was yet to be confirmed, but the friends and relatives of the people in the boat were informing NADMO about their missing. Adams said some passengers were safely evacuated during the search and rescue operation and the search operation is continuing.
