A German Defense Ministry spokeswoman previously said Berlin received the request several days ago, without giving further details or specifying the extent of her country’s response to the request.
If Germany agrees, it will follow in the footsteps of Britain, which earlier this month became the first country to publicly supply long-range cruise missiles to Kyiv.
The United States has so far refrained from supplying Ukraine with missiles from the Tactical Missile System, which have a range of 297 km, fearing that Ukraine could use them to strike the Russian interior.
The German government has significantly increased its military supplies to Kiev in recent months, but remains reluctant to supply it with cruise missiles or support the Ukrainian air force and help deliver F-16 fighters, for example.
Unique Abilities
And defense policy researcher Muhammad Hassan said in an interview with Sky News Arabia that Germany’s Taurus cruise missiles, if approved, would be a tremendous addition to the forces’ strike capabilities. Ukrainian forces, targeting the depth of Russian control areas, especially those overlooking the Sea of Azov and connecting areas, in the terrain between Crimea and the Russian mainland, that is, targeting behind the lines Russians.
Hassan identified the capabilities of this type of missile on a number of points, including:
German “Taurus” cruise missiles have a range of over 500 km. It can be installed on Ukrainian Su-24 bombers. It is equipped with a double warhead weighing up to a thousand pounds, which gives it an effective destructive capability against various strong fortifications, military installations, airports and command and control centers. German cruise missiles can be installed on F-16 fighters if delivered to Ukraine. The missile is capable of hitting the Russian capital, Moscow.
Germany’s position
The defense policy researcher expected Germany to deliver the missiles to Ukraine if needs on the ground were necessary, and if the balance of risk between Moscow and Berlin allowed.
Hassan pointed out that the effectiveness of these missiles will become clearer if the Ukrainian army switches to the advanced attack stage instead of the offensive defense that has prevailed since the counterattack in late August.
However, all military indicators and field equipment indicate that Ukraine began to possess offensive and qualitative weapons according to Western doctrine for carrying out “blitzkrieg” missions.
