In a press conference held by Filippo Grandi in Cairo during a visit during which he was briefed on the conditions of the displaced persons on the border with Sudan, he explained that “the initial appeal launched by the Secretary General of the United Nations (Antonio Guterres) as an urgent regional plan to mobilize funding of $470 million to deal with the influx of refugees to neighboring countries. Of this amount, $114 million has been allocated to Egypt to support its efforts to welcome people fleeing the conflict.

He continued, “The Egyptian government has informed the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees of the need to take into account the importance of providing support to deal with the influx of approximately 350,000 Sudanese into Egypt.

Meanwhile, Grandi called on the Egyptian government to “continue its traditional generosity” in opening its crossing points to refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan, explaining that around 175,000 have crossed the border into Egypt since the beginning of crisis.

Call for donors

The UN official also called on international donors to “respond quickly” to appeals launched by the United Nations, to mobilize the necessary funding for this humanitarian crisis.

Grandi said he “heard during his presence in Cairo of attempts to hold an international donors’ conference to address the humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict in Sudan”, stressing that “there is a necessary need” for such a conference.

He added: “The international community must not leave Egypt alone in the face of the influx of refugees from the south, and there is an urgent need to support it, whether in terms of infrastructure or services such as education. , health, etc.

Sissi meeting

During his visit to Egypt, Grandi met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi and was preceded by a meeting with League of Arab States Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit to discuss Egyptian and Arab efforts to welcome the displaced Sudanese.

The official said he “understands what Sisi has expressed to him regarding the concern of the Egyptian side regarding the economic burdens and the pressure on the services and security measures needed to deal with the massive influx of refugees to the southern borders of his country”.

Grandi confirmed that he called on the Egyptian authorities to “implement all measures they deem appropriate, in particular with regard to those who lost their travel documents in the fighting, but taking into account humanitarian considerations. and the risks to which the displaced are exposed if they return to their country.”

He also noted that Sisi “assured him of Egypt’s commitment to provide support to the refugees as much as possible”, pointing out that a number of Egyptian residents in the south of the country are personally hosting Sudanese refugees.

Need help for the displaced

During the press conference, Grandi stressed the “urgent need to help the displaced” inside Sudan, explaining that “there is a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, on the Sudanese side of the crossing points, to facilitate the movement of displaced persons towards Egypt”. ”

In this regard, he called on the warring parties in Sudan to “stop the fighting and assume their responsibilities towards their people, and put an end to the human tragedies he was monitoring among the displaced at the border”.
