The Kremlin and Kyiv responded to Orban’s call to prevent the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

The Kremlin and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry have commented on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s call to prevent the Ukrainian armed forces’ counter-offensive and to bring Moscow and Kyiv to the negotiating table. The head of the Hungarian government had previously expressed the opinion that the Ukrainian offensive could turn into a “bloody massacre”.

Assessing the likelihood of a resumption of dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that “this option is not visible and there are no preconditions”. transmits Mayak radio station telegram channel.

“Although we state and see that there have been more and more discussions of experts and statements of representatives of European countries around, more and more abstract so far, but the arguments are always about a kind of peace process. Admittedly, in these arguments there is no political will to take into account the objectives and concerns of our country. And for us this is a top priority,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko, commenting on his Facebook page (owned by Meta*), said that Kiev would be ready to accept a truce only after the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. If this condition is not met, the situation will be reduced to a “freeze of the status quo”, and Russia will be able to regroup, reinforce its forces and resume hostilities, the diplomat said in a statement.

“At the same time, we took into account Viktor Orban’s assertion that it is difficult for him to be the only pro-peace prime minister in the EU,” Nikolenko continued.

To “facilitate this situation”, the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called on the Hungarian Prime Minister to “finally” start “to act”. He suggested condemning the actions of the Russian side in Ukraine, demanding that Moscow cease fighting and withdraw its troops, as well as joining “Russia’s international isolation measures” and “not to undermine the unity of the EU”.

In an interview with Kossuth radio station on June 2, Orban said that the escalation of hostilities along the line of contact in Ukraine could lead to a “bloody massacre”. According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, the attacker is likely to suffer three times more casualties than the defender. Orban also declared the need to convince the parties of the need for a ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations before the start of the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
