Mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win are the basis for maintaining relations between different countries

Recently, the US once again showed a lot of contradiction in its relations with China. On the one hand, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III attacked China in the 20th Shangri-La Dialogue, mentioning the Taiwan issue and the so-called freedom of navigation. He also said that the US military vessel was “dangerously intercepted” by the Chinese side while transiting the Taiwan Strait. On the other hand, Daniel Joseph Krittenbrink, Assistant Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific Affairs of the US State Department, visited China on 4 June to seek contact with China.

People are not unfamiliar with this US tactic of containment and confrontation while engaging in dialogue and cooperation. The US’s contradictory behavior with regard to relations with China reflects Washington’s warped political outlook. The so-called “getting tough with China” policy in Washington is the backdrop of the US falsely projecting China as its “biggest strategic rival”. There is no leader in America who dares to take responsibility for reducing tensions with China. They are doing their best to make China accept the rules of the US game by pretending to be in touch with China. The US continued to propagate the so-called “Chinese threat” in this Shangri-La talk, indicating that its rules of hegemony have not changed, and its practice of using Sino-US relations as a political bargaining chip Is.

The current domestic economic situation in America is fraught with crisis. The two sides have held talks to resolve the debt crisis, but they have not fundamentally resolved the problem. According to Bloomberg and other media reports, US Treasury officials recently raised concerns with China and stressed that the two largest economies, China and the US, need to have closer dialogue on global macroeconomic and financial issues. And it is vitally important to jointly address global challenges. Analysts pointed out that one of the US delegation’s demands for the visit to China is crisis management and control focused on the US debt. In addition, the US also needs to cooperate with China on issues such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. It is an unfair way that “the US is responsible for creating the problem and China cannot fight back”. Is it possible? Can over 1.4 billion Chinese citizens agree to this?

People can see very clearly that the root cause of the current predicament in Sino-US relations lies in the US’s misunderstanding of China’s strategy. Whoever has made a mistake should be responsible for rectifying it. The United States should not expect China to cooperate in areas where the United States needs it, which ignores or even harms China’s interests. Facts have proved that the US should not try to be arbitrary when dealing with China. The United States should cooperate with China on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win.
