Erdogan proposes to create a commission to investigate the destruction of the hydroelectric plant

Turkish President Recep Erdogan, in a telephone conversation, proposed to the Russian and Ukrainian presidents to create a commission to investigate the destruction of the dam at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. This is reported by the Turkish edition HĂĽrriyet.

According to Erdogan, experts from the warring parties, as well as representatives of the UN and the international community, should join the investigation.

President of Turkey noted that Ankara is ready to do everything possible to carry out an investigation. Erdogan drew attention to his country’s role in the negotiations on the grain agreement, while Moscow and Kiev do not communicate directly with each other, but act with the participation of international mediators. Erdogan suggested using the same method when creating the commission.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after talks with the Turkish President writing in a telegram he gave Erdogan a list of Ukraine’s urgent needs to eliminate the catastrophe. Zelenskyy called the destruction of the hydroelectric plant a Russian terrorist attack.

Kremlin declared that Putin blamed Ukraine for what happened and called the destruction a “barbaric act”. This was Putin’s first comment on a dam failure in the Kherson region.

Zelenskyy’s and Putin’s responses to Erdogan’s proposal to create a commission were not reported.

EU countries declared that they will send help to Ukraine to eliminate the consequences of the destruction of the station and support the inhabitants. Germany offered five thousand water filters and several dozen generators, Austria offered 20 water tanks and 10 mud pumps. Lithuania and Germany are ready to send shelter materials, including tents, beds and blankets.

At the same time, the President of Ukraine, in a conversation with Bild noted that international organisations, including the Red Cross, have not yet responded to requests for assistance from Kiev.

On the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station became known the morning of June 6. Due to the uncontrolled discharge of water from the reservoir, settlements along the banks of the Dnieper began to flood. According to one version, the dam, which is controlled by the Russian authorities, would have exploded, according to another, previous damage would be at the origin of the accident. Ukrainian authorities are sure that Russian troops blew up the dam. Russia denies this, accusing Ukraine of bombing the dam. A state of emergency has been declared in the Russian-held part of the Kherson region in Ukraine. How reported TASS in the emergency services, as a result of the breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station on the left bank of the Dnieper, about three thousand houses in 15 settlements were flooded, almost one and a half thousand people were been evacuated. Locals report that more than 650 houses were blocked with people on the roofs of the buildings. Volunteers say they have to buy boats themselves to take people. Some volunteers helping with the evacuation say local authorities are not providing any assistance and are not letting boats pass. According to some reports, those who managed to get out of the flood zone are not allowed to leave the city by the Russian army, Remarks “Layout”. Russian-appointed Kherson region chief Vladimir Saldo said more than four thousand people had been evacuated from flooded areas. According to the official, about 50 temporary accommodation centers for 3,000 places are free in the region. According to the Ukrainian authorities, more than 80 settlements were found to be in the flood zone on the right bank of the Dnieper controlled by Kiev. Nearly 2,000 homes were flooded. More than 1,400 people have been evacuated in the past few hours. There are no casualties among the civilian population and military personnel. Seven people are considered missing.
