Sergei Mikhailov was born in Arkhangelsk on March 17, 1971, graduated from MGIMO. He has headed TASS, Russia’s oldest news agency, since 2012.
Mikhailov is chairman of the Council of Heads of State News Agencies of the CIS and vice-chairman of the Organization of Asian and Pacific News Agencies, and also heads the media council of the Assembly of the Peoples eurasians.
During his work at TASS, Mikhailov received a diploma from the President of Russia, and also received state awards.
New CEO
Andrei Kondrashov, who will now head the news agency, was born on June 30, 1973 in Alma-Ata. He graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of the Moscow Independent University of Ecological and Political Sciences, later – a master’s degree from RANEPA with a degree in political science.
Kondrashov has been working in television since 1991 – he was his own correspondent for the All-Russian State Television and Broadcasting Company in Central Asia, covered the work of the State Duma, was a member of the Kremlin pool, hosted Vesti and Vesti Nedeli, notes the government press service.
In 2018, Kondrashov became the Deputy Director General of the All-Russian State Broadcasting and Television Corporation. The journalist received state awards, including for his work in hot spots and his coverage of events in Crimea.
Kondrashov directed the documentaries Putin (2018) and Crimea. The Way to the Motherland” (2015), which recounts the entry of Crimea into Russia.
Sergei Mikhailov, now a former director general of TASS, and the agency’s new head, Andrey Kondrashov, were on Western sanctions lists after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
Justification for the imposition of sanctions against Mikhailov in the EU in April 2022 called that he is the CEO of TASS, Russia’s largest agency, which “distributes through its extensive network of overseas offices distorted information about Ukraine that serves the interests of the political leaders of the Russian Federation” .
