Lie-ins could save your life.

Sleeping for an additional two hours on a day off from work cuts the possibility of suffering a heart attack or stroke in those who do not get enough shuteye by 63 per cent.

Experts at Nanjing Medical University in China tracked the sleeping patterns of 3,400 people and discovered that those getting less than six hours per night during the week, but two more hours at the weekend, were two-thirds less likely to suffer from medical emergencies.

Catching up on sleep at weekends is linked to “low risk of angina, stroke and heart disease – especially in those with short sleep durations during the week”.

An adequate amount of slumber – seven or eight hours a night for a majority of people – is known to protect against heart issues but a recent survey revealed that Brits get an average of just 15 minutes extra rest at weekends.
