The French Constitutional Council has recognized the legitimacy of the pension reform

At the same time, the council blocked some minor articles of the document, which, according to the members of this state institution, are not directly related to the pension reform. In particular, the provision that it is necessary for companies to maintain a certain number of jobs for people over the age of 55.

The Constitutional Council also commented on the request of a group of parliamentarians to organize a so-called “popular initiative referendum” in the country, but did not give it the green light, because the document was drafted at the haste, and from a legal point of view, not everything has been worded accordingly.

p class=””>True, the other day the deputies filed another application, where the shortcomings were eliminated. It will be examined in the Constitutional Council, which will take several weeks. This request has a good chance of being approved.

This means that in nine months, the initiative group must collect 4.8 million signatures on a special online platform, which corresponds to one tenth of French voters. If this is done, then a referendum will take place in France six months later, and its results will finally decide the fate of the pension reform in its current form.

On the eve of the Constitutional Council building, which is not far from the Louvre, reinforced squads of police and gendarmes were dispatched. All the streets leading in this direction were blocked by special iron barriers.

Note that this Friday in more than 100 cities in France there were major demonstrations by opponents of this reform. In Marseille, union delegates have taken over the many highways leading to the port city. Le Havre and Rouen were also blocked.

In Paris, at the call of the left-wing Force Ouvrière union, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and other central trade unions, thousands of citizens gathered in the square in front of the metropolitan municipality, chanting anti-government slogans. The capital’s students, in turn, gathered in Napoleon’s courtyard, as the large-scale square on which the Louvre’s glass pyramid stands is called.

A little earlier, a truck was circulating in the city center, on board which a banner “Resign Macron!” was hooked!
