Quito : At least 12 inmates were killed and three others injured during armed clashes between crime groups at an Ecuadorian prison on Friday. The Attorney General’s Office confirmed this. The clashes began on Friday afternoon inside the Littoral prison in Guayaquil, the capital of Guayas province and one of the country’s most violent cities, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the government, the clash broke out between inmates from four wards fighting for control of the prison, led by criminal gangs linked to drug trafficking. The death toll was confirmed on Saturday morning and the injured were transferred to care homes in Guayaquil.
The Littoral Penitentiary has been the scene of some of the recorded massacres since February 2021, in which more than 400 inmates have been killed, according to official figures, due to power disputes in Ecuadorian prisons.
