Colombia. Sri Lanka, which is going through an economic crisis, will now export one lakh monkeys to survive. Sri Lanka is exploring the possibility of exporting 100,000 endangered monkeys to China, one of its biggest bilateral creditors, according to a BBC report by the country’s agriculture minister. The Toque macaque monkey is endemic to Sri Lanka and is classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has asked officials to study China’s request to buy Tokay macaques. Actually the Chinese government wants these monkeys for their zoos. The report said the minister said a request to display 100,000 monkeys in more than 1,000 Chinese zoos could be considered. It added that no financial details have been made available so far.
Let us inform that a special discussion took place on Tuesday on sending monkeys to China under the first phase of the programme. The meeting was informed that the current monkey population in Sri Lanka has reached around 3 million and the animals are a threat to local crops. The appointment of a committee to study the legal procedures for the program was also discussed.
The report said that the request to China comes at a time when the local authorities have taken several measures to curb the population of monkeys. Sri Lanka bans the export of almost all live livestock and the proposed sale comes at a time when the country is facing its worst economic crisis.
