Due to U.S. sanctions, Cuba has again faced a fuel crisis at gas stations – Reuters

“If the energy situation in the world is not easy, then in Cuba it will be much more acute due to the blockade. It is difficult for us to charter tankers, to attract financing, to meet the requirements of contracts of fuel,” O Levy said. , adding that any problem with a single tanker leads to massive supply disruptions – it is extremely problematic to secure new supplies in a short time in the face of severe sanctions.

The current interruptions are due to the fact that “fuel suppliers could not fulfill their obligations due to the difficult situation on the global energy market”. In turn, on the Island of Liberty itself there is no raw material necessary for the production of automotive fuel. As Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel previously reported, the country typically consumes 500-600 tons of fuel per day, but now no more than 400 tons are available on Liberty Island.
Against the background of fuel supply interruptions, it was decided to sell a smaller amount of fuel for sale. At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Energy indicated that the deficit could last until the end of April. Even if, according to the head of the department, “decisions have been taken which allow us to count on the stabilization of the situation”. However, noted O Levy, there is no need to count on a return to 2017-2018, when there was in fact no interruption in the supply of fuel at gas stations in Cuba.
”We will continue to increase the fuel supply to petrol stations in a limited way so as not to affect the fuel supply to vital industries,” the minister said, citing the potato harvest as an example.
These days, all over Cuba, there are long lines near gas stations that are mostly closed. This happens periodically on Liberty Island. Similar to the current fuel interruptions were observed just over a year ago. Drivers spend 8 hours or more in queues for fuel. Sometimes queues even line up at gas stations that are still closed in the hope that a tanker truck will arrive here. Information about this is transmitted by word of mouth, and with the development of the Internet on the Island of Freedom – also in Internet groups and chats in various instant messengers. Skirmishes periodically occur in the queues themselves, though for the most part Cubans calmly and humbly wait for the opportunity to refuel their cars. There seems to be no reason to count on a quick resolution to the fuel crisis.
