Using low-power reactors, they will desalinate the water and produce electricity. It is possible to build a floating reactor in Aqaba, Jordan. Khaled Toukan also said that in the next 10 years Jordan is unlikely to be ready to use large reactors.

Tukan recalled that the joint project with Rosatom to build a large-capacity nuclear power plant in Jordan was facing “challenges” of a technical and financial nature. Moscow and Amman decided in 2015 to build the first nuclear power plant in Jordan, consisting of two electric units with a total capacity of two thousand megawatts. The cost of the project was $10 billion. The first unit was to be launched in the early 2020s, but it was decided that it was unsafe to build a nuclear power plant away from major water sources. In 2018, Jordan abandoned the project and decided to switch to small reactors.
